01. THE NAME

Pronounciation: Sawl-ya
The name "Sáile" is my current "artist"-pseudonym.

My choice upon it fell after a few weeks of research and brainstorming trying to find a surname which corresponds with my work and its content, as well as my name and its sound. Due to personal reasons I decided to go for an Irish noun - Sàile - meaning "sea" or "seawater". Ireland has always been a source of inspiration and fulfilment, charging my batteries, soothing my eye's need for calm yet energetic natural beauty and wilderness. The connection to that island runs deep and has its roots somewhere in my early teens, sparked off by traditional fiddle folk music and pop music as well as picture books and reading on mythological Celtic background.

Pseudonyms have been used through out history for various reasons, mainly to guarantee privacy, to sell more work (for example women authors adapting a male pseudonym to be appreciated and taken seriously) or even to protect an author's life who mighthave to publish in exile or release political work in his/her own country.

Personally I chose it out of privacy but mainly to give my "work" a name, something that can stand for it.
If it will stay "Sáile" I cannot say; for now it seems fitting

)( has become my personal logo in 2006. It is not necessarily important to understand it, but for anyone interested, please feel free to read on;

This symbol has proven itself as efficient and suitable for my work. A lot of my 2D-works deal with the fleeting moments of "in between", one of my current most explored themes in various directions, for example travelling the depth of nothingness, isolation, momentariness, contradiction, breathlessness, mortality, coincidence as well as never ending seconds of seemingly meaningless every day life situations. It refers to a gap, something missing, something left out, something referring to space, to existence and non-existence. It for example hints at the unmentioned, the overlooked, the misinterpreted, but also at the seemingly unimportant moments of every day life,

"in between".

Its associations, beside a gap, are wings as well as waning and waxing moon all in one symbol, connected to their force over the sea and living creatures - yet of course those latter associations are of infantile dreamy quality.

02. ON MY WORK

Until 2004 I had mainly been active in the performing arts, participated in musicals and English as well as German theatre plays, performed singing (Jazz) on stage in groups as well as solo and had totally concentrated on this area. After changing school for a more art-focused education I graduated in the Leistungs-courses English, Art, Religion/Philosophy and Biology. I discovered photography rather by coincidence around 2004, starting off digitally, soon showing my first snaps to a professional Photographer who encouraged me in continuing to explore the medium. By the end of 2005 I had as good as successfully applied to the Academy of Fine Arts of Vienna in Multimedia-class, had fallen in love with Polaroid film and its facets of possibilities, dug into stop-animation and Super 8 filming and helped raising the only Polariod-gallery POLANOIR located in Vienna, now spreading over Berlin, Barcelona and continuously growing with artists participating from all over the world, me as a proud part of them. Currently exploring singing and music in my leisure time by collaborating with close friends and relatives and testing various directing and filming techniques, I have recently re-discovered painting and drawing, also snatching opportunities of starting copper/linol-printing as well as sculpturing. My current focus slowly returns back to the performing arts, training skills in acting and singing, definitely profiting from the other arts.
